Dr. Matthew Sorley

Biography

Matthew Sorley is an Associate Professor in the Teaching Stream at Carleton University’s Department of Psychology. His teaching philosophy emphasizes creating engaging and supportive environments where students can take ownership of their learning and refine the skills necessary for academic and personal success. Sorley has developed specialized courses such as Introduction to Psychology II exclusively for Psychology majors, fostering a more engaging learning experience through active learning assignments. He also co-designed a first-year seminar focused on skills for success in university, covering topics like self-confidence, goal setting, and career exploration. His course on Sport Performance Psychology allows students to apply psychological principles in a practical context through a structured project. In addition to his teaching, Sorley is passionate about community engagement and has worked on initiatives aimed at providing educational opportunities to low-income individuals. Throughout his career, he has emphasized the importance of experiential learning and has held roles such as Instructor in Crisis Management at Algonquin College and Training Coordinator for a crisis intervention team.
