Dr. Matthew Zalkind

Biography

Matthew Zalkind is an American cellist and Assistant Professor at the University of Wisconsin–Madison's Mead Witter School of Music. Recognized for his impressive refinement and eloquent phrasing, he has performed extensively both in the United States and abroad as a recitalist, soloist, and chamber musician. He has garnered accolades including top prizes at competitions such as the Washington International Competition and the Beijing International Cello Competition. His performances as a soloist include collaborations with the Utah Symphony, Albany Symphony, and Musica Viva Moscow Chamber Orchestra. Zalkind has also been featured in prominent venues, including Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center, and is known for his work with the acclaimed Harlem String Quartet. Alongside his wife, cellist Alice Yoo, he serves as Co-Artistic Director of the Denver Chamber Music Festival, a leading destination for chamber music in Colorado. He holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from the Juilliard School and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Michigan, with primary mentorship from Richard Hoyt, Pegsoon Whang, and others.
