Biography

Matthias Hauswirth leads the Lugano Computing Education Research Lab (LuCE) at the Software Institute of the Faculty of Informatics. His research focuses on boundary programming language design and implementation in computing education, with a primary emphasis on how individuals learn to program. He has been active in Swiss efforts to integrate informatics into schools, including the EFI-CH program and the GymInf program. He represents USI in national initiatives aimed at educating high school informatics teachers. Co-authoring a programming textbook utilized in Swiss high schools, Matthias also contributed to the computing education research group that developed several pedagogical techniques. His interests include software performance regarding intricate interactions among system layers, hardware, operating systems, virtual machines, and application frameworks. He has served on the program committees for key international conferences related to programming language research and computing education. Matthias is passionate about teaching and has designed and taught numerous courses at various levels, focusing on providing engaging learning experiences. He also enjoys mentoring students through projects and internships and initiating research opportunities for undergraduate students.
