Biography

Dr. Gislason joined the Faculty of Health Sciences in September 2014. She is an Associate Professor focused on health equity and was previously a Banting Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Northern British Columbia, where her research concentrated on the intersections of public health and intensive resource extraction. Dr. Gislason holds a PhD in Sociology (Medical Sociology) from the University of Sussex, UK, and a Master's degree in Sociology with a double major in Sociology and Women's Studies from the University of Victoria, Canada. A champion for ecosystem approaches to health, she addresses the interconnection between human, animal, and ecosystem health alongside community partners and the Nations Health Authority. Dr. Gislason teaches and guides research teams in developing Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI)-informed evidence-generating tools. Her research integrates social inequities and health scholarship with ecosystem approaches to health, focusing on climate change and its impact on health and well-being both nationally and internationally. She actively works on developing community-based mental health initiatives for children and youth, particularly relating to climate change and intergenerational climate equity. Dr. Gislason seeks to connect theory and practice, utilizing primary research to tackle real-world health challenges and contributes to the body of evidence that informs policy formation and practice in the field of public health.
