Dr. Mel Braun

Biography

Mel Braun heads the Desautels Faculty of Music's vocal program, renowned for its collaborative and holistic approach to training singers. He has witnessed his students build significant careers as performers and teachers. Braun serves as the music director for various operatic ensembles at the University of Manitoba, where he coordinates the Faculty’s Contemporary Opera Lab projects. His academic background includes a Bachelor of Music and a Master of Music from the University of Toronto. As an active performer, he has participated in many performances and broadcasts of early music with organizations like Tafelmusik and Opera Atelier and has premiered new music at prestigious venues across Canada. His extensive discography includes solo albums and recordings with ensembles. Braun is also engaged in ongoing research as Co-Artistic Director and Conductor with Dead Winter, focusing on new approaches to choral music-making, including collaborative projects with renowned composer Andrew Balfour. His commitment to mentorship in the arts is reflected in his leadership of innovative programs that support pop musicians and songwriters. Braun enjoys working closely with young singers and rock musicians, contributing to Winnipeg’s vibrant music scene.
