Biography

Melissa Byrn is the Assistant Dean of Clinical Research at the University of Chicago's Biological Sciences Division. In her role, she leads the development and implementation of strategic initiatives to support faculty research goals and enhance the clinical research enterprise. Melissa collaborates with stakeholders from the Dean of Clinical Research, the UChicago Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Institute of Translational Medicine, UChicago Medicine, and the University Research Administration to identify opportunities that improve the integration of clinical research with patient care within the health care system. She oversees the Office of Clinical Research, which was established in 2004 to strengthen research infrastructure with a focus on human subject protection, data integrity, and site performance, helping research staff advance medical discoveries and innovations. Prior to her current position, Melissa was the Director of Innovation Programs at the Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the University of Chicago, where she developed strategies for science and technology entrepreneurship. She has held leadership roles in clinical trial operations and regulatory compliance at both the University of Chicago and the University of Pennsylvania, with expertise in FDA regulations and operations. Melissa is passionate about mentoring and training the next generation of STEM innovators.
