Biography

Meredith Johnson is a double bassist and instructor at the Desautels Faculty of Music, University of Manitoba. She began her double bass training in Nashville, TN, and studied at Vanderbilt University, where she pursued a degree in English Literature before shifting focus towards music. After graduating, she continued her studies at Boston University under notable bassists from the Boston Symphony Orchestra, earning her Master’s Degree in Performance in 1996. Johnson was a fellow at the New World Symphony from 1999 to 2002, after which she moved to Philadelphia for further studies. Johnson's performance career includes highlights such as principal bass with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and membership with the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, alongside collaborations with esteemed chamber musicians and national performances. She is involved in various educational initiatives, having founded Bassitoba, an annual symposium, and serving as a clinician for universities across North America. Johnson is a member of faculty at the Eastern Music Festival in North Carolina and continues to engage in creative projects, commissioning new works for the double bass.
