Biography

Dr. Goldwater received a Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics from the University of Rochester in 2003 and completed a PhD in Psychology at the University of Texas at Austin in 2009. He subsequently held a Postdoctoral Fellowship at Northwestern University before joining the University of Sydney in 2013. His research investigates the nature, acquisition, and use of knowledge, focusing on how children and adults look past superficial aspects to recognize deep structural commonalities in disparate situations, problems, and ideas. His work examines basic cognitive processes and their developmental trajectories, as well as the underlying neural mechanisms. Dr. Goldwater’s research aligns with the Faculty of Science Research Strengths, including Brain, Behaviour & Cognition, Cultivating Scientific Capability, and Preventing & Treating Disease & Disorder. He explores a range of topics such as how knowledge changes learning and development, the neural support for complex cognition, and the impact of executive function on learning and decision-making. Additionally, he investigates how concepts are represented and how children acquire language.
