Dr. Michael Barzelay

Biography

Michael Barzelay is a distinguished professor at the London School of Economics (LSE) specializing in Public Management. He was a member of the Department of Management since its inception in 2006 and served as its head from 2013 to 2015. Barzelay earned his undergraduate degree from Stanford University with a self-designed interdisciplinary major in Studies of the Developing World, followed by graduate studies at Yale University, where he received a Master’s in Public Private Management and a PhD in Political Science. His doctoral dissertation was supervised by Charles E. Lindblom and published as "Politicized Market Economy: Alcohol Brazil’s Energy Strategy" by the University of California Press. Barzelay's career includes roles at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government and research works on public management that led to influential publications including "Breaking Bureaucracy" and "Improving Research Policy Dialogue." His recent work focuses on design-oriented professional disciplines within public management, with a particular emphasis on Latin America. He has served in editorial roles for leading journals and has been awarded an honorary doctorate for his contributions to the field. Barzelay has an extensive consulting background with numerous public institutions and international organizations, enhancing his impact on public management theory and practice worldwide.
