Dr. Michael Barzelay

Biography

Michael Barzelay is a Professor of Public Management at the London School of Economics and Political Science. He joined the Department of Management at its inception in 2006, having previously served as an Assistant Professor of Public Policy at Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government. Barzelay has an undergraduate degree from Stanford University, where he designed an interdisciplinary major focused on the Studies of the Developing World, and earned both his Master’s and PhD from Yale University, specializing in Political Science. He has authored several influential works, including 'Breaking Bureaucracy: New Vision Managing Government' and 'Public Management Design-Oriented Professional Discipline.' His research interests zero in on New Public Management and executive leadership, aiming to enhance governmental oversight and strategic planning, with significant contributions to both theory and practice in public management. Additionally, Barzelay has held visiting academic appointments at various institutions globally and has consulted for numerous public organizations, including the World Bank and U.S. Department of Defense. His work aims to strengthen problem-solving competencies in public organizations, particularly in educational settings in Latin America.
