Biography

Michael Griffin is a Professor of Greek Philosophy at the University of British Columbia, where he is jointly appointed in the Department of Ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern Studies. He serves as the joint general editor for the Ancient Commentators Series. Griffin completed his undergraduate degree in Classics at UBC in 2004, followed by a master’s degree in 2006 and a doctorate in 2009 from the University of Oxford. His research focuses on Greek and Roman philosophy, specifically Neoplatonism, philosophical education, and cross-cultural philosophy that intersects with Buddhism. Currently, he studies the philosophical education practices of late antiquity and investigates the role of ancient philosophy in promoting individual and collective flourishing. His recent publications include works on Aristotle's Categories and the ancient reception of classical philosophical texts. Griffin has also engaged in various projects related to teaching and learning, technology, and community-engaged learning.
