Biography

Michael Hopkins is the Chair of Music Education at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where he teaches courses in string techniques, orchestra methods, research methods, and the psychology of music. He has served as a guest conductor for over 100 orchestra festivals and clinics across the United States and has delivered 60 presentations at national, international, and state music education conferences on topics such as string education and music technology. An active composer and arranger, he has composed and arranged 70 published works for orchestra, with music published by Alfred Music Publishing, Grand Mesa Music, Kendor Music Publishing, Inc., and J.W. Pepper’s MyScore. He authored 'Art of String Teaching,' a comprehensive resource for pre-service teachers, professional orchestra conductors, and private studio teachers, which is complemented by a YouTube channel featuring 100 instructional videos on string technique. His articles have been published in several journals including the Journal of Research in Music Education, International Journal of Music Education, and Music Educators’ Journal. Additionally, he directs the Michigan String Educators Workshop and serves on the board of the Michigan Chapter of the American String Teachers Association (ASTA), as well as on national committees such as the Collegiate Committee and Research Committee.
