Biography

Michael Thornton enjoys a distinguished and varied career as an orchestral performer, chamber musician, soloist, and pedagogue. He has performed on six continents with acclaimed ensembles and has presented master classes at some of the world's most prestigious musical institutions. Mr. Thornton holds concurrent positions as Principal Horn with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and the Colorado Symphony, working with renowned classical and popular artists including Yo-Yo Ma, Itzak Perlman, and Renee Fleming. He has performed and recorded with the Philadelphia Orchestra, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, Dallas Symphony, KBS Symphony in South Korea, and Toronto Symphony Orchestra. A native of Long Island, NY, he was a student of Randy Gardner, Jerome Ashby, and Julie Landsman. He is an avid chamber musician and highly recognized soloist, featured at festivals such as the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, Mainly Mozart, Spoleto, Moab Music Festival, Campos Jordao International Winter Festival in Brazil, and Medellin Festicamara in Colombia. Mr. Thornton is the horn artist faculty at the Colorado College Summer Music Festival and has held a professorship in Horn at the University of Colorado at Boulder since 1999. He is certified in Mental Toughness Training from the Human Performance Institute in Orlando, Florida, which he incorporates into his teaching, helping students achieve success in various orchestras across the United States and abroad. He has received numerous awards and accolades for his contribution to students’ development including the Marinus Smith Award from CU Boulder.
