Biography

Professor Michael Zavrel focuses on the development of sustainable bioprocesses. His research addresses the processing of biogenic raw materials to compete with food use, exploring the utilization of agricultural residues and waste streams to create bio-based and biodegradable products. His areas of research include fermentation, downstream processing, and process design. Zavrel studied Chemical Engineering at the Technical University of Munich and completed a semester abroad at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He conducted his diploma thesis at Roche Diagnostics and earned his doctorate at the Chair of Biochemical Engineering at RWTH Aachen University. Before his appointment as Professor of Bioprocess Engineering at TUM in 2022, he worked in industrial research and development at Süd-Chemie Clariant, where he was the Head of Development and Site Manager for Biomanufacturing. Throughout his career, he has contributed significantly to the field through various publications and has received several awards, including the Borchers Badge from RWTH Aachen University and the Jürgen Manchot Award from TUM.
