Biography

Michelle Bae-Dimitriadis conducts decolonizing and anti-racist research in art education, emphasizing critical place-based inquiries and a transcultural feminist approach. Her work has particularly focused on the experiences of minoritized Asian immigrants and refugee groups in the United States. In 2012, she founded the UrbanWild art and education community program in Buffalo, New York, which engages in youth participatory research with refugee children, particularly girls. This program produces mobile storytelling archives, oral storytelling, photovoice projects, site-specific art installations, performances, and digital graphic novels. Her scholarly contributions are published in peer-reviewed journals within the fields of art education, media studies, and women and gender studies. Bae-Dimitriadis has received multiple awards including the Manuel Barkan Award and the J. Eugene Grigsby, Jr. Award. She currently serves as a senior editor for the Art Education Journal, published by the National Art Education Association. She obtained her PhD from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
