Dr. Michelle Nowlin

Biography

Michelle Nowlin joined the faculty of Duke University School of Law in June 2008 as a Clinical Professor and Co-Director of the Environmental Law Policy Clinic. In this role, she supervises clinic students and co-teaches the seminar portion of the clinic. Throughout her tenure at Duke, Nowlin has worked on a variety of matters including a precedent-setting settlement in North Carolina to protect endangered sea turtles, filing an amicus curiae brief before the U.S. Supreme Court on behalf of low-wealth communities, and innovative approaches to reduce marine debris. She teaches courses in Food and Agricultural Law Policy and currently serves as chair of the board of advisors for Duke Campus Farm, as well as a faculty advisor for the Duke Environmental Law and Policy Forum. Previously, Nowlin was a senior attorney at the Southern Environmental Law Center in Chapel Hill, where she led initiatives to develop pollution control programs for Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations and litigated cases relating to the Clean Water Act and Endangered Species Act. Nowlin has received several awards for her work, including the Faculty Award for Outstanding Leadership in Sustainability from Duke in 2013 and the Bill Holman Award for Environmental Advocacy. She earned her B.A. with Highest Honors from the University of Florida and received a dual J.D./M.A. from Duke Law School and the Nicholas School of the Environment in 1992.
