Biography

Michelle O'Toole is a Professor at the University of Edinburgh Business School, where she holds a personal chair in Management Organisation Studies and leads the Organisation Studies Group. With a broad research focus on people’s lived experiences in work and workplaces, her specific interests include organizational control, individual occupational identities, and the social construction of meaning in organizations. Her work has been published in top-tier journals including Organization Studies and Human Relations, and has attracted funding from organizations such as UKRI and the British Academy. Previously, Michelle worked in the construction industry before transitioning into academia. She is a member of the School Executive Committee and takes on several supervisory roles for PhD and MSc students. Michelle holds a Ph.D. from the University of Warwick, an MSc from University College Dublin, and a BSc from the Dublin Institute of Technology. Additionally, she is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and an Academic Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development (CIPD).
