Biography

Joelle Welling is the Interim Director of the School of Creative and Performing Arts and a Professor of Music at the University of Calgary. She holds a PhD in Music Theory from the University of Texas at Austin, and has also completed degrees in Music Theory from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Voice Performance from the University of Colorado-Boulder. Welling's teaching experience includes music theory at McGill University and the University of Texas, as well as voice and choir at the Medicine Hat College Conservatory. Her research interests focus on the analysis and performance of music, particularly text-music relations and the song repertoire from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. She has published articles in the College Music Symposium and GAMUT and has presented papers at various conferences in Canada and the United States. Welling has held significant academic administrative roles, including Associate Dean (Students) in the Faculty of Arts and Interim Head of the Department of Art & Art History. She has received multiple awards for teaching excellence, recognizing her contributions to music education.
