Mirjam Broersma investigates language acquisition and the use of multiple languages. Her research primarily addresses language acquisition in early bilingualism among children and adults, employing psycholinguistic experimental approaches. She currently leads a large study examining the effects of psychological trauma on the acquisition of the Dutch language among Ukrainian refugees, funded by a Vici grant from the Dutch Research Council (NWO). Her research interests include language acquisition in refugees, birth language memories in international adoptees, sound perception and production, word recognition, segmentation in continuous speech, and vocal emotion recognition in non-native listening. Broersma has co-developed various research tools, including LexTALE, which evaluates lexical proficiency among advanced learners of English, Dutch, and German, and has employed a ventriloquist paradigm in her studies. Over the years, she has been involved in multiple projects and research grants focusing on these themes, reflecting her commitment to understanding the cognitive developmental aspects of multilingualism.
