Dr. Mitchell Nathan

Biography

Mitchell J. Nathan studies how thinking, teaching, and learning interact, with particular emphasis on the role that language and embodied processes play in learning and teaching mathematics and engineering. He has authored over 200 peer-reviewed publications and secured research funding from major organizations such as the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Education. Nathan is a founding officer of the International Society for Learning Sciences and has served on several committees for the National Academies. His educational background includes a PhD in Cognitive Psychology from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Nathan’s significant contributions to engineering and computer science education include co-founding an international group focused on embodied education and actively participating in workshops and conferences across the globe. He has received numerous awards, including the Vilas Distinguished Achievement Professor title at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and was inducted into the university’s Teaching Academy for his excellence in teaching. Throughout his career, Nathan has been engaged in various research projects aimed at improving educational practices and developing innovative methods to enhance student learning in STEM.
