Biography

Mohammad Anwar is a Senior Lecturer in African Studies and International Development at the University of Edinburgh. He leads a large, multi-country, multi-year project called 'Planetary AI', funded by the UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship, and has experience teaching various postgraduate and undergraduate courses, both online and on campus. Anwar has been awarded a Senior Fellowship by the Higher Education Academy (UK) in recognition of his teaching excellence. He has worked as a Senior Research Fellow (Honorary) at the British Institute in Eastern Africa and as a Senior Research Associate at the University of Johannesburg. Additionally, Anwar is a Fellow of the World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council on Digital Economy and Society and holds a PhD in Geography from Trinity College Dublin. His prior employment includes positions at the Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford, and the University of Johannesburg. Anwar has contributed extensively to public debate through blogs, articles, and interviews, and has received funding from various organizations including UKRI, the Leverhulme Trust, and the British Academy. His research interests encompass a range of topics such as globalization, economic geography, digital economy, digital labor, and African political economy, among others.
