Biography

Murray Humphries is a Professor in the Department of Natural Resource Sciences at McGill University. His research group focuses on wildlife and environmental contributions to traditional food systems of Indigenous Peoples. He collaborates with northern research partners, federal and provincial governments, and Indigenous organizations to design and implement field-based research that incorporates traditional ecological knowledge. Murray serves as the Associate Director of McGill’s Centre for Indigenous Peoples’ Nutrition and Environment, which addresses Indigenous concerns regarding environmental education and traditional food systems. His work is dedicated to enhancing the influence of self-determined, place-based knowledge in Canada's science culture and public policy. He is also a Co-research Director at Braiding Knowledges Canada, a not-for-profit organization aimed at reconciling Indigenous knowledge approaches with scientific methods. Murray’s interests include navigating change in northern climates, ecology, biodiversity, sustainability, and ecosystem management. He actively engages in community-based research projects across northern Canada, including Yukon, Nunavut, Nunavik, and Eeyou Istchee.
