Dr. Mutlu Cukurova

Biography

Mutlu Cukurova is affiliated with the UCL Knowledge Lab at the Institute of Education and the UCL Centre for Artificial Intelligence at the Faculty of Engineering. He manages large-scale research projects, supervises postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers, and leads the Design Use AI Education module within the Education Technology programme. Cukurova is engaged in policy-making activities related to AI education as an external expert for organizations including UNESCO, OECD, and the European Commission. He is part of UCL's Grand Challenges Transformative Technologies working group and serves as an editor for the British Journal of Educational Technology and associate editor for the International Journal of Child-Computer Interaction. His research investigates human-AI complementarity in education and aims to address pressing socio-educational challenges in preparing individuals for future AI systems, emphasizing the need for skills beyond routine cognitive abilities typically valued in traditional education systems. He is particularly interested in understanding, computationally modeling, and supporting individuals' capabilities to learn how to learn and solve complex problems collaboratively. His transdisciplinary research encompasses methodologies and theories from Learning Sciences, Computer Science, and Human-Computer Interaction.
