Biography

Nana Sartania has evolved from a postdoctoral researcher in Molecular Pharmacology into a Medical educator with a particular interest in undergraduate selection and curriculum design and development. Her main research interests are concerned with predictive validity of admissions criteria used in Medical School, examining how contextual data in the admissions process impacts efforts to widen access to medical education locally. She gained a PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology through the study of G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs), specifically dopamine and opiate receptors, and has published original research on the topic. Sartania has been awarded prestigious fellowships from UNESCO (Research Centre of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences), the European Molecular Biology Organisation (EMBO at the University of Kent), and the Wellcome Trust for her postgraduate studies and postdoctoral research at the Universities of Kent and Glasgow. As a senior academic at her medical school, she makes substantial contributions to teaching and assessment, particularly for the first years of undergraduate study, and has held combined organisational roles, including co-director for Year 3 and Phase 3 Lead transition coordinator for direct entry Year 3 students from St Andrews, Malaysia, and Brunei. She is actively involved in outreach work with applicants from lower socio-economic backgrounds through the REACH programme, which she helped establish in 2010, and has received the Medical Directorate Award from NHS Education Scotland in the category 'Excellence in Transition'.
