Biography

Nancy Plankey-Videla is an Associate Professor of Sociology with a courtesy appointment in the School of Law at Texas A&M University. Plankey-Videla has a distinctive background, having been born in Chile and raised in Vermont and central Mexico. She focuses on understanding how structural inequality affects the opportunities and barriers faced by women workers in Latin America and Latinx immigrants in the U.S. Her award-winning book, 'Dance Together: Gender, Power, Globalization in a Mexican Garment Firm' (2012), examines the shifts in power within the global economy and their consequences on women's empowerment in the workplace. Her community-engaged research delves into issues faced by the Latinx immigrant community in Texas, including wage theft, the racialization of day laborers, and the implications of deportation threats on families and communities.
