Biography

Neil Armitage attained his PhD in Social Change from the University of Manchester in the UK. His doctoral thesis, titled 'The Cosmopolitan Play: Biographical Network Approach', examined how individuals develop a cosmopolitan perspective, emphasizing engagement with others through the analysis of young British and Spanish adults' biographies. This research explored critical life-events and social networks that foster cosmopolitan sociability. He also holds a joint Bachelor-Master's degree in Social Sciences from Uppsala University in Sweden, complemented by a year at Leiden University in the Netherlands and research internships in Seville, Spain. Before arriving at UBC in 2015, Neil was a Sociology Lecturer at Canterbury Christ Church University in the UK, where he taught undergraduate courses on Youth Studies, Sociology of Education, and Research Methods. In his current role as a Learning Strategist at the Centre for Student Involvement and Careers (CSI-C) at UBC, Neil contributes to various initiatives, including 'Prof-in-Commons' and Knitting Neil workshops, promoting experiential learning and career skill development. His research interests include Student-led Pedagogy, First-Year Experience, Youth Transitions, Mixed Methods, Critical Heritage, and Sociology of Sport.
