Biography

Neil studied Psychology at the University of Liverpool from 1995 to 1998 and went on to earn a PG Cert in Learning and Teaching and a PhD in Education from Liverpool John Moores University between 1998 and 2001. He worked for a year at the University of Bolton before taking a lectureship in Psychology Education at the University of Manchester in 2002. Neil was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2007 and became a Professor of Psychology Education in 2010. He served as the Research Director for Education from 2013 to 2016 and was the Head of the Manchester Institute of Education from 2016 to 2020. In 2021, he became the Associate Dean (Research) for the Faculty of Humanities. His research interests focus on social emotional learning, mental health, and special educational needs, particularly concerning autism spectrum conditions. Neil has led several significant research projects and secured substantial external funding, totaling £10 million as principal investigator. He is a visiting professor at several institutions and has contributed to various academic boards and committees.
