Biography

Nicole Franz is an expert in political economy and sustainable development, with decades of experience working in intergovernmental organizations, notably the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development. As a leader in the equitable livelihoods team at FAO's Fisheries and Aquaculture Division, she has focused on advancing global sustainability policies by making policy processes inclusive and empowering various stakeholders. Her leadership in developing and implementing the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries within the context of food security and poverty eradication has cemented her dedication to combining responsible natural resource use with social development. During her tenure at FAO, Nicole kickstarted the Illuminating Hidden Harvests initiative to generate and disseminate new evidence regarding the benefits and impacts of small-scale fisheries. In addition to her policy research contributions, she is a committed mentor and capacity-builder, having supervised and mentored over 20 early-career scientists, interns, and young professionals in the past decade, while also serving as a guest lecturer.
