Biography

Nina Howe received her BA (Honours) in Psychology from York University, Toronto in 1974, followed by an MA in Developmental Psychology from the University of Western Ontario in 1977, specializing in early childhood education. After gaining professional certification as an elementary school teacher through a post-degree program at the University of Alberta, she earned her Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology from the University of Waterloo in 1986. Since 1998, she has been a member of the Education Department at Concordia University, with previous visiting scholar positions at Lancaster University, England, in 2006, 2013, and 2017. Her research interests focus on sibling relationships, particularly the co-construction of meaning in these dynamics, the influence of maternal contexts, and the implications for children's social knowledge. Howe is currently involved in SSHRC-funded projects examining children's play, particularly in dramatic play centers, and the effects of child care policies in Canada. She has co-edited a book on early childhood care and education in Canada, addressing historical developments and current trends.
