Norman currently teaches programming at Singapore University of Technology and Design, focusing primarily on first-year programming courses in Python and Java. He is passionate about teaching and is interested in using classroom response questions to effectively teach programming concepts, addressing student misconceptions. His research interests include issues related to teaching and learning computing in higher education and improving assessment practices in learning design. He is particularly focused on learning analytics and the insights gained from applying data-mining techniques to student data. Before joining SUTD, Norman spent nine years teaching in the local polytechnic sector where he taught mathematics and physics, in addition to introductory data mining and mechanics material. He has experience teaching diploma students as well as adult learners as an adjunct lecturer at the Singapore Institute of Technology. He is well-acquainted with pedagogical methods such as problem-based learning, peer instruction, and the flipped classroom model. Norman completed his PhD in computational materials science at the National University of Singapore in 2010 and has conducted significant research on the mechanical properties of Sn-based intermetallic compounds using density functional theory and molecular dynamics simulations.
This applies to PhD programs in Architecture and Sustainable Design (ASD), Engineering Product Development (EPD), Engineering Systems and Design (ESD), Information Systems Technology and Design (ISTD), Science, Mathematics and Technology (SMT), and Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (HASS).
