Biography

Oriol Sans is an Associate Professor and Director of Orchestral Activities at the Mead Witter School of Music, University of Wisconsin-Madison. He conducts the UW–Madison Symphony Orchestra and teaches graduate students in conducting. Previously, he held a position as Associate Director of Orchestras at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Mr. Sans has performed with numerous renowned soloists and collaborated with celebrated composers across various orchestras and ensembles, such as the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Santa Fe Symphony, and New Mexico Philharmonic. In 2016, he was the music director for the Detroit Symphony Youth Orchestra. He has a reputation for working with young musicians and has been a guest conductor at the Interlochen Summer Academy and the Sewanee Summer Music Festival. His eclectic repertoire as an opera conductor includes performances of Verdi’s Falstaff, Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro, and others. A native of Catalonia, Spain, he studied orchestral and choral conducting at the Barcelona Conservatory, where he received the school’s Honors Award. Mr. Sans holds a master's degree in orchestral conducting and a Doctorate in Musical Arts from the University of Michigan, along with a bachelor's degree in humanities from Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona.
