Dr. Owen Astrachan

Biography

Owen L. Astrachan is a Professor of the Practice in the Department of Computer Science at Duke University, where he has been a faculty member since 2000. He also serves as the Associate Director for Undergraduate Studies within the department. Astrachan’s academic interests are centered on object-oriented design, software architecture, and computer science education, with an emphasis on apprentice learning and automated reasoning. He has contributed significantly to the field of computer science education, including key initiatives aimed at broadening participation and enhancing diversity in computer science through various research projects funded by the National Science Foundation. His scholarly work includes publications in high-impact conferences such as the ACM Technical Symposium on Computer Science Education, where he has presented on topics including the impact of Advanced Placement courses in computer science. Astrachan holds a Ph.D. from Duke University, and he is committed to improving the quality of computer science education at all levels, from K-12 to higher education.
