Dr. Parry Karp

Biography

Parry Karp is a distinguished Professor of Cello and Artist in Residence at the Mead Witter School of Music, University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he also directs the string chamber music program. With over 50 years as a member of the Pro Arte Quartet, he holds the longest tenure in the quartet's 100-year history. Karp is an active solo artist, giving numerous recitals annually, and has performed with renowned pianists such as Howard Karp and Eli Kalman. His performances include orchestral concerti, notably in Romania with the National Radio Orchestra in 2002. Karp is dedicated to advancing new music and has premiered numerous works, showcasing compositions from a variety of celebrated composers. He has a significant recording career, focusing on solo cello repertoire and ensemble works, including collaborations with the Pro Arte Quartet that have received acclaim in various music publications. Karp's influence extends to his teaching, where many of his students have achieved success in professional string quartets and major orchestras. He has been recognized for his teaching excellence with several awards, including the Chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching Award. Karp is also a visiting professor at the University of British Columbia and has been a fellow at Princeton University, reflecting his commitment to the academic community in addition to his performance career.
