Biography

Patricia Shaw is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia. She was the Founding Chair of the Nations Languages Program from 1996 to 2014. Her research focuses on Anthropological Linguistics, with particular interests in sound systems, interface phonology, phonetics, morphology, literacy, oral traditions, and language contact and change. Over decades, she has worked closely with members of critically endangered language communities, including Salish, Wakashan, Siouan, Athapaskan, and Algonquian languages, to record and analyze extant grammatical and cultural knowledge. Shaw has developed methodologies for archiving and created pedagogical materials aimed at language revitalization, teaching Nations languages within British Columbia communities.
