Biography

Paul Boniface Akaabre is an Assistant Professor at the University of Alberta in the School of Urban and Regional Planning. He received his PhD from the University of British Columbia, where he explored traditional leasehold tenure and its influence on housing investment and redevelopment rights. Prior to his current role, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Toronto, where he facilitated workshops through the Equitable Development Data Insight Training Initiative. His research focuses on urban planning, housing development, finance, and justice, as well as socio-economic spatial justice. He has worked on various projects addressing affordable housing crises and indigenous peoples' planning considerations. His current research involves auditing housing discrimination in Canada and exploring redevelopment models for underutilized buildings in Canada and Ghana. Dr. Akaabre leads the Cities Spatial Justice Lab and has contributed to notable publications on housing discrimination and urban planning practices.
