Dr. Paul Whitinui

Biography

Paul Whitinui is a Professor and Special Advisor to the Vice-President Indigenous at the University of Victoria, focusing on Exercise Science, Physical, and Health Education. An Indigenous Māori scholar from Aotearoa New Zealand, he has extensive experience in Indigenous community health development, education, sport, and leisure. His scholarly work addresses the relationships between Indigenous education, health, and wellbeing, particularly in theorizing social practices that benefit the aspirations of Indigenous peoples and their communities. Whitinui’s expertise includes culturally inclusive and responsive pedagogy, Indigenous cultural safety, and Indigenous sports sociology. He has developed numerous courses aimed at improving understanding of the social determinants associated with resilience and wellbeing in Indigenous contexts. His notable publications include works on decolonizing sports sociology and the educational aspirations of Māori families, demonstrating his commitment to advancing Indigenous perspectives in academia.
