Biography

Pericles Lewis is the Douglas Tracy Smith Professor of Comparative Literature at Yale University and has served as Dean of Yale College. He earned his B.A. in English literature from McGill University in 1990, followed by an A.M. and Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1991 and 1997, respectively. He joined the Yale faculty in 1998, progressing from assistant professor to full professor by 2007. His research focuses on the social and political contexts of modern literature, particularly the contributions of early twentieth-century modernists to European literature. Lewis has authored and edited numerous scholarly works, including editions of the Norton Anthology of World Literature. He is actively involved in academic governance and mentorship, having supervised 14 doctoral dissertations and received the Graduate Mentor Award from Yale in 2004. He is a dual citizen of the United States and Canada and resides in New Haven with his wife, Sheila Hayre, a staff attorney and law school educator.
