Biography

Peter Oundjian has shared his love for music with audiences for five decades. The 2017-2018 season marked his fourteenth and final season as Music Director of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO), during which the orchestra underwent a significant transformation in its presence worldwide, with recordings and tours acclaimed for innovative programming and extensive audience growth. Between 2012 and 2018, he served as Music Director of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra (RSNO), where he toured multiple countries, recorded albums, and performed at the 2018 BBC Proms. Previously, he held prominent positions such as Principal Guest Conductor with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and Artistic Director of the Philadelphia Orchestra’s Mozart Festival. In the 2018-2019 season, he began his role as Music Director of the Colorado Music Festival, continuing his legacy of conducting across ten prestigious orchestras worldwide. Oundjian has been a visiting professor at the Yale School of Music since the age of 25, mentoring young violinists, conductors, and chamber groups for 38 years. Originally from Toronto and raised in Surrey, England, he began his musical career as a violinist and has performed extensively around the globe. He attended the Royal College of Music in London and The Juilliard School, studying under renowned mentors such as Ivan Galamian and Itzhak Perlman. Oundjian's versatility and dedication to music have inspired generations of musicians, ensuring his continued impact in the field of orchestral conducting.
