Dr. Philip Chappell

Biography

Philip Chappell is an Honorary Associate Professor at Macquarie University, specializing in Applied Linguistics and TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). With extensive experience in English Language Teaching (ELT) both in Australia and internationally, he transitioned into academia in 2011. He has managed language programs and developed professional development initiatives for language teachers. Dr. Chappell has served as Director of Education in the Department of Linguistics at Macquarie University, where he provided academic leadership to ensure the integrity and quality of education. He was also Course Director for Applied Linguistics in TESOL, teaching postgraduate courses on Linguistics, Language Teaching, Genre, Discourse and Multimodality, and evaluating language classroom practices. His research interests focus on Dialogic Learning and Teaching, TESOL methodology, Language Classroom Interaction, and Language Teacher Cognition, with a particular emphasis on supporting language teachers in providing quality English language education in their home countries. Throughout his career, Dr. Chappell has made significant contributions to the field through research and publications, often exploring sociocultural approaches to language learning and teaching, genre-based pedagogy, and the application of systemic functional grammar in language teaching. He is currently able to accept new research students for supervision.
