Biography

Phil is a Lecturer in Education Studies at the University of Glasgow, having joined in January 2025. He previously held positions at University College London (Institute of Education) and the University of Suffolk. Phil is a sociologist of education with a particular interest in the relationship between policy, pedagogy, and inequality. He is currently writing a monograph that focuses on the policy contexts in which state and independent schools in England operate, particularly in relation to curriculum, assessment, and inspection. This book explores the history of policy arrangements and their contemporary impact on practice. Additionally, Phil is a member of the ESRC Education Research Programme 2021-2026, which explores and compares the relationships between research, policy, and practice across the four nations of the UK. His research interests include Sociology of Education, Education Policy, Pedagogy, and Educational Inequality.
