Biography

Philip Vandermey is a Dutch-Canadian architect and Founding Partner of the award-winning architecture office SPECTACLE Bureau for Architecture and Urbanism Inc. He studied architecture at the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape (SAPL) at the University of Calgary, where he received the Canadian Architect Student Award of Excellence and the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada Student Medal. Vandermey has worked in prominent architecture offices in Calgary, Montreal, Barcelona, and Rotterdam. In 2013, he co-founded SPECTACLE in Calgary with Jessie Andjelic, where they focus on creating architecture that critically examines the influence of cities. His project 'Stepping Greener' won the RAIC National Urban Design Award in 2024, and Archinect listed SPECTACLE as one of the 15 architecture firms defining the future of Canadian architecture in 2023. Vandermey has taught as a Sessional Instructor at SAPL since 2008 and became a part-time Assistant Professor in 2023, managing the Master of Architecture program. In 2025, he and Andjelic opened a research lab called Change Directive, aiming to create speculative visions that explore the evolving relationship between architecture and cities. Vandermey is particularly interested in uncovering implicit systems within architecture and revealing possibilities that reshape architectural practice.
