Biography

Pia Banzhaf’s research lies at the intersection of art, cognition, and society, focusing on the potential for increasing tolerance to ambiguity among spectators of object performances. She received her Ph.D. in Cultural Studies from Queen’s University, Kingston, specializing in cognitive poetics and puppetry. Additionally, she completed her M.A. in German Studies at Memorial University of Newfoundland. Pia has a background in German linguistics, cultural anthropology, and textile art from the University of Dortmund, Germany. Before joining Michigan State University (MSU), she taught first and second-year German language and culture courses at various institutions, including Memorial University, Queen’s University, and the University of Manitoba. Pia is also licensed to teach in North Rhine-Westphalia and currently instructs second and third-year German classes at the Residential College of Arts and Humanities (RCAH) at MSU.
