Biography

Rachel Kearns is a consultant anaesthetist at Glasgow Royal Infirmary and holds a Chief Scientist Office Career Researcher Fellowship. Her research focuses on the linkage of routinely collected health data to study maternal and child health outcomes. Currently, her research examines the effects of maternal anaesthetic interventions and adverse maternal lifestyle choices on offspring health and educational outcomes. Additionally, Rachel leads a course on the intercalated BMedSci in critical care and peri-operative medicine at the University of Glasgow. She is particularly interested in how public health interventions influence maternal, obstetric, and offspring outcomes and explores the use of regional anaesthesia to improve surgical results, as well as the role of anaesthesia in peri-operative inflammation. Her work has been supported by various grants, including studies on the effects of public health policy on maternal lifestyle choices and their impact on offspring health outcomes, as part of a population-based linkage study for the Wellbeing Women initiative (2020 - 2023).
