Biography

Rachel Pownall is a Professor of Finance at Maastricht University's School of Business and Economics. Her research interests broadly cover the realm of understanding investor behavior, with a particular focus on art markets as assets and emotional attachment. She is interested in the behavioral issues of how emotions and psychology influence individuals' financial decision-making involving risk. This includes understanding non-pecuniary benefits of investment, aesthetic, environmental, and emotional values, as well as how these factors influence individual perceptions of status and wellbeing which in turn affect investment decisions. Rachel is also interested in the use of neuroimaging techniques to measure brain activity, an approach that has established the field of Neurofinance. Her passion for research stems from the belief that understanding how individuals make risky decisions while incorporating non-pecuniary returns can promote sustainable investment decisions in the future.
