Biography

Rafael Ortega, MD, is a trained anesthesiologist and professor at the Chobanian and Avedisian School of Medicine at Boston University. A native of the Dominican Republic, he graduated from Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña (UNPHU) in Santo Domingo and completed his anesthesiology training in the early 1980s. Dr. Ortega holds board certifications from the American Board of Anesthesiology and the National Board of Echocardiography. His research interests focus on cardiac and thoracic anesthesia, education in anesthesiology, and the development of computer-assisted instructional methods. Throughout his career, he has contributed to various committees within the American Society of Anesthesiologists and the Massachusetts Society of Anesthesiologists, as well as the Wood Library Museum. His publications include numerous papers, book chapters, and multimedia programs covering topics like airway management and operating room safety. Dr. Ortega has also spearheaded initiatives for diversity and inclusion within the Boston University Medical Campus, working to foster a heterogeneous and inclusive environment for students and faculty.
