Biography

Rajendra Gyawali, an optometrist and health service researcher, joined the Centre for Health System Safety Research at the Australian Institute of Health Innovation as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in 2022. He focuses on developing, evaluating, and implementing evidence-based tools and programs to improve healthcare delivery across various settings. His research interests include optimizing the use of routinely collected data to drive healthcare improvements. Rajendra holds a PhD from UNSW Sydney, a Master's in Optometry Research from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, and a Bachelor of Optometry from the Institute of Medicine, Tribhuvan University. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and a member of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. Before moving to Australia for his PhD, he practiced as an optometrist in private, hospital, and community settings in Nepal and the Maldives. He has led the development of new optometry schools in Malawi, Eritrea, and Vietnam. His PhD research utilized implementation science methods to address gaps in evidence-based eye care in Australia. Rajendra is currently working with key stakeholders in the Australian eye health system to co-design a novel online support tool for eyecare professionals to optimize the delivery of appropriate eye care for people with diabetes.
