Biography

Joining King’s, Richard Brock worked as a secondary physics teacher. He is interested in learning science education, particularly in critiquing concepts of knowledge and understanding. Dr. Brock employs microgenetic methods with relatively high-frequency sampling to develop fine-grained representations of change and to study students' learning. His work addresses both short-term and long-term changes in students' learning. In collaboration with colleagues, Dr. Brock has developed interests in researching teacher wellbeing, focusing on critiquing the wellbeing support available for teachers and developing new approaches to support the wellbeing of trainee teachers. His research has examined the nature of tacit knowledge in science education and has produced a series of booklets through the Institute of Physics, containing narratives for teaching physics. Richard's current research spans several areas including the nature of knowledge and understanding in science education, teacher wellbeing, timescales of learning, and the use of narratives in physics education.
