Richard Brown received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Oregon in 1981 and completed his internship at Brown Medical School. He held a faculty position at the Center of Alcohol Studies at Rutgers University before returning to Brown University. For 25 years prior to moving to the University of Texas at Austin, he was a Full Professor and Director of Addictions Research at the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Brown has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) since 1992, serving as Principal Investigator (PI) on 18 NIH and 2 American Cancer Society-funded grants totaling $24 million. His research interests encompass various areas related to health behavior change, including the development of effective tobacco cessation treatments and intervention strategies for adult and adolescent alcohol and drug abuse. He is also involved in developing digital technology-based interventions that incorporate cognitive-behavioral treatment, motivational interviewing, and acceptance commitment therapy. Brown has published over 180 scientific articles and currently serves on the Editorial Board of Contemporary Clinical Trials.
