Richard Burrows is a distinguished percussionist known for his dynamic performances and innovative approach to contemporary classical music. With a career spanning decades, Burrows has established himself as a leading figure in the percussion community, recognized for his versatility and technical prowess. He embarked on his musical journey at a young age, earning master's degrees from the University of Toronto in both performance and music education. Under the mentorship of esteemed percussionists Russell Hartenberger, Robin Engelman, and Bev Johnston, he developed a solid foundation that propelled him towards future successes. Burrows is a founding member of TorQ Percussion Quartet, which has captivated audiences worldwide since its inception in 2004 with its eclectic repertoire and engaging stage presence. The quartet has performed at prestigious venues and festivals across North America and Europe, including concerto performances with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal. In addition to his work with TorQ, Burrows is a dedicated solo artist and educator, premiering numerous works by leading composers and expanding the percussion repertoire. His performances are characterized by a blend of technical mastery and expressive depth, earning acclaim from audiences and critics alike. As the artistic director of the Open Ears Festival, an annual event celebrating adventurous sound and innovative music, he has played a pivotal role in presenting cutting-edge works to festival audiences.
