Biography

Richard Fox is a Professor and Chair in Pacific Asian Studies at the University of Victoria. His academic training includes a PhD in Anthropology and Religious Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies, alongside an MA in Oriental African Religions and a BA in Religious Studies. Prior to joining the University of Victoria, he taught for six years at the Institute of Ethnology at Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg. His work critically examines themes such as language, text, and translation, as well as religion’s intersection with gender and power. Additionally, he has contributed to various professional organizations, taking leadership roles in initiatives aimed at promoting scholarship in Southeast Asian studies. Fox has authored numerous publications on these subjects, further establishing his reputation as a leading scholar in Asian cultural and religious studies.
